"Impact of the New Measures on Household Electricity Bills: October-December 2023"

November 2, 2023 marked a moment of particular interest for Italian families regarding the cost of electricity. In response to economic challenges, the Italian government has introduced new measures to ease the burden of electricity bills on families.

Enhanced Bill Bonus:

  • Legislative decree no. 131 of 29 September 2023 extended the enhanced bill bonus until 31 December 2023.
  • This measure provides discounts on electricity and gas consumption for families with an ISEE of up to 15,000 euros, and up to 30,000 euros for large families with at least 4 dependent children.
  • In addition to the bonus, the decree also confirms the reduced VAT of 5% on gas and the elimination of general system charges until the end of the year.

Increase in Electricity Bills:

  • The Electricity, Gas and Water Authority (ARERA) has announced an 18.6% increase in electricity bills for the typical household in the fourth quarter of 2023.
  • Despite the increase, the final price for the typical family in the fourth quarter of 2023, i.e. 28.29 euro cents per kWh, was 57% lower than the figure from a year ago, equal to 66.01 euro cents per kWh.

New Bill Bonus:

  • A new bonus with an increased amount has been introduced from 1 October 2023, with a total of four million families set to benefit from this initiative.

These measures represent a significant response to the economic challenges faced by Italian families, especially in a period of uncertainty on the energy front. The various initiatives aim to provide some economic relief, but also highlight the need for a long-term energy strategy that can mitigate the impact of price fluctuations on the domestic economy.
